Using AAC to support mental health and wellbeing
Mental health is important for everyone, but for people with complex communication needs, it can be harder to express emotions, process thoughts, and regulate feelings. This can make maintaining wellbeing more challenging. Research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2016) shows that 50.2% of people with severe disabilities affecting mobility, communication and self-care experience mental health challenges, compared to 17.5% in the general population. AAC tools can make a real difference by helping individuals communicate their needs, share feelings, and build resilience. In this blog, Becky, Clinical AAC Specialist and Speech and Language Therapist at Smartbox, shares practical ways to use AAC to support conversations about mental health, create safe spaces for expression, and promote wellbeing. Creating a safe and supportive environment for AAC users to talk about their mental health is essential. Below are practical ways to encourage open communication. Personalise Voco Chat for emotional check-ins: Voco Chat is a pragmatically organised, phrase-based grid set designed to support AAC users in functional, everyday conversations. Within the My Toolkit section, it includes a variety of social and emotional wellbeing topics, offering ready-made content for users to explore while also providing guidance for conversation partners. Here are some ways you could further customise Voco Chat to support conversations around mental health and wellbeing: Below is video where Becky demonstrates how these personalisations can be made: Conversations are most meaningful when they feel mutual and inclusive, especially for AAC users. A safe and calm communication environment can help individuals feel seen, heard, and supported. Here’s how you can foster such an environment: When discussing mental health with an AAC user, being a good communication partner is key. It’s important we avoid placing all the responsibility on the AAC user, and instead, create an open, supportive dialogue. Here are some tips: Grid has a range of customisable grid sets, such as Voco Chat, which are designed to support conversations around thoughts and feelings. These tools enable users to express their emotions, needs, and preferences, empowering them to self-advocate and take a proactive role in managing their mental wellbeing – not just during challenging times, but every day. With person-centred adjustments and supportive communication strategies, AAC can act as a powerful tool for fostering understanding, improving regulation, and enhancing mental health. Together, we can create spaces, both physical and digital, where everyone feels seen, heard, valued, and supported. At Smartbox, we are committed to sharing more ways to use Grid to support communication, independence, and wellbeing for all AAC users. Alongside Voco Chat, we have our Super Core and Aphasia Duo grid sets, which also feature grids designed to support communication around mental health.
