Honouring Pride Month
June is Pride Month, a time to honour the LGBTQ+ community, celebrate progress toward equality, and recognise ongoing struggles for rights and acceptance. At Smartbox, we want to emphasise the importance of having inclusive vocabulary in AAC, and how this benefits everyone. Having the right words to discuss gender and sexuality is essential for all AAC users for improved safety, health and happiness. Our world is filled with diverse, beautiful people with varied experiences of gender and sexuality. Everyone, including AAC users, needs language to express themselves fully. For LGBTQ+ AAC users, this means sharing their identities and participating in conversations about who they are. For others, it means having the words to discuss these universal topics. Inclusive vocabulary in AAC allows all people to ask questions, seek support, and share thoughts with loved ones and professionals. This fosters understanding and connection, creating a more inclusive world. Imagine not being able to discuss your identity or ask important questions. Everyone needs the language to express themselves and understand others. It’s a universal need. This Pride Month, let’s focus on the importance of inclusive vocabulary for all AAC users. By ensuring everyone has the tools to talk about gender and sexuality, we make our world more connected and compassionate.
