Introducing five new designs
Earlier this year, we launched Smartbox Communication Boards in partnership with Widgit as part of our ongoing mission to make public spaces more inclusive with better access to AAC. Initially, we had 5 designs each tailored to support communication in different settings, including hospitals, libraries, parks, schools and sensory rooms. We are very pleased to share that we have now expanded the collection with an additional five designs, plus an option for a fully customised board! We recognise the importance of having the right symbols for your setting to enable people to fully engage with their environment. For this reason, all our designs are customisable, allowing you to change the title and up to 8 cells on a board to include objects, equipment or people specific to the location. And now you can even create a Communication Board that is fully bespoke to your setting with the option to customise all available cells so that people using the space have the right vocabulary to meet their communication needs. Oasis Academy is a primary school in the UK supporting children with a wide range of communication needs. As part of their Total Communication approach, they recently installed Communication Boards in their sensory room and playground. The sensory room in particular is a highly motivating space and now, with the addition of a Smartbox Communication Board, there are new opportunities for self-expression in this space. Staff have observed a variety of purposeful interactions – from students using symbols to request favourite activities, like the swing, to exploring the letter section to spell out motivating words. Smartbox Communication Boards have been designed using Super Core grid sets, a symbol-based core vocabulary designed for people of any age. Super Core was created by SLT and Head of Content here at Smartbox, Daisy. The addition of these 5 new designs represents another step towards our mission of bringing AAC everywhere.
