Meet Romane
This is the story of Romane, a 15-year-old from France who uses a Grid Pad 13 to communicate. Her journey with AAC highlights how the right technology can support independence and self-expression. This story was shared by Smartbox France. Romane is a 15-year-old student with cerebral palsy who has been using a communication device since the age of 7 to express herself and connect with others. Before having her device, she primarily communicated through personal gestures with her family and occasionally used a pictogram binder. While this worked at home, it made interactions and participation at school more challenging. In the summer of 2024, Romane faced a significant challenge when her previous communication device broke, leaving her without a way to express herself. While this was a difficult time, she showed patience and resilience, even as her family grew concerned about how she would communicate. Determined to find a solution, they explored new options and, with guidance from TechLab, discovered the Grid Pad 13. Known for its ease of use and intuitive Grid 3 software, the device offered both strong technical performance and an affordable price, making it the right choice for Romane. Before using Grid 3, Romane had been using a different AAC software. When she started with Grid Pad 13, its intuitive interface and customisation options allowed her to communicate more easily and efficiently with those around her compared to her previous systems. One feature Romane particularly loves is Symoji. These expressive animations help her convey emotions more naturally and engagingly. With Symoji, she can add visual expressions to her messages, making conversations more interactive and enjoyable. This playful dimension adds a new richness to her communication and reinforces her pleasure in interacting with those around her, whether with her family, classmates or teachers.
