Myles’ story: trying Grid Pad Go
Myles is a 10-year-old student at a school in the UK, who has recently started using AAC. Like many emergent AAC users, discovering the most effective communication strategies has been a journey of exploration and adaptation. Before using AAC, Myles relied solely on behaviours, gestures, pointing, and vocalisations to communicate. While his teachers and speech therapist explored a range of paper-based AAC options, none seemed to capture his interest or meet his needs effectively. A turning point came about a year ago when Myles began using a school communication aid. This device helped to reduce his frustration and made it easier for him to engage with others during lessons. Myles especially enjoyed using it to watch video clips. However, the bulky design wasn’t practical for Myles. In November, Myles started testing the Grid Pad Go, our latest portable communication aid. Its versatility and streamlined design have been a much better fit, giving him greater freedom to explore and communicate wherever he goes. Since Myles started using Grid Pad Go, his Mum told us that he’s especially fond of the Symoji content in Grid (animated characters that can help AAC users express themselves). Symoji has become a source of entertainment and learning for Myles, and he’s even started mimicking the sounds he finds funny. “Myles has recently been using Voco Chat in lessons. He really loves play activities like Simon Says where he asks his communication partner to pretend to be a dinosaur! Searching for specific words like ‘dinosaur’ and waiting for a reaction is a clear sign of intentional communication. While it’s still early days, these moments highlight his progress with AAC.” -Amy Clayfield, Speech and Language Therapist At school, Myles’ teachers have been impressed with Grid Pad Go’s durability and robust design. “We’ve definitely tested that more than once, and nothing has broken!” his speech therapist shares. The grab handle has been another hit, making it easy for Myles and his team to carry the device wherever they go. Its easy-to-clean surface is also a big plus, especially as Myles enjoys outdoor and messy play. Since using the Grid Pad Go, Myles has been communicating more and engaging with the world in new ways.
